* - It would be interesting to see statistics on the various branches and sects of Hinduism but I have not found any reliable sources thus far.  Adherents.com places Vaishnavism as the largest sect, with just under two thirds of the total Hindu population (580 million), while Saivism comes in second with just under one quarter (230 million).  Shaktism, Brahmanism and other Hindu sects, however, are not listed.
