What is Gaudiya-Vaishnavism?

Technically speaking, Gaudiya-vaishnavism is a branch of Hindu Vaishnavism (followers of Vishnu or God) originating in Gaudadesa (Bengal, India). Gaudiya-vaishnavas follow the teachings of Lord Caitanya who is considered to be the spiritual preceptor for this age and an incarnation of the Divine Couple, Sri-Sri Radha and Krsna, the highest and most intimate manifestation of the Godhead. Lord Caitanya appeared in this world in 1486 AD at the holy place of Mayapura, India. His mission was to spread love of God throughout the world and to all people, especially the fallen and downtrodden. His specific method was to engage everyone in chanting the “Hare Krsna” maha-mantra, which He explained to be the most powerful and purifying mantra. This mantra can be chanted by anyone and at any time, and it can be chanted loudly, softly or within the mind. Followers of Gaudiya-vaishnavism are always engaged in chanting this maha-mantra while meditating on the Divine Couple in a loving mood, and they are commonly known in the West as the “Hare Krishnas.”

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,

Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
